Rethinking the writing app
Hi, I’m Ricky, creator of Freewriter. I built Freewriter because I couldn’t find a writing app that fit my needs.
Through multiple incantations, the app evolved, adding new features each time, making it uniquely unconventional.
Unlike big startups, I embraced the “crazy” ideas they might avoid. This app is different, and it works.

Important: Freewriter saves your data locally in your browser, not in the cloud.
If you or someone else clears cookies or browsing data, all your projects will be lost. To prevent this, back up your work daily.
Pros: Your data stays privateāno company servers are involved.
Cons: You are fully responsible for your data. If you donāt back it up and store it elsewhere, you risk losing everything if your computer is lost or damaged.
Key Points:
- Freewriter automatically saves your progress. There are no save buttons.
Your documents are stored locally and are only accessible from the same computer. - Clearing your browserās data will delete your documents. In Chrome, clearing “Cookies and other site data” will erase all documents and projects, but “Cached Images and Files” can be deleted without affecting them.
- Freewriter uses localStorage with a 5MB limit, roughly 2.5 million words. Store only essential documents in the app and back up the rest elsewhere to ensure safety.
